Characteristics of an accessible ebook
An accessible ebook is a book that, from its conception, has been designed to allow everyone to access all of its content, regardless of their condition.
In concrete terms, this means that an accessible ebook will present particular characteristics:
The reader will be able to adjust the content, namely:
choose the font;
change the font size as desired.
The images will have alternative descriptions, at least those that are essential to understanding what is being read. Otherwise, these images would be lost content for people who suffer from visual impairments or who are blind.
It's going to be easy for the reader to easily navigate through the content, with:
a structured table of contents including clearly identified levels of titles;
any well-linked footnotes, to allow them to be consulted while returning to the starting point easily.
The book will make it easier for text-to-speech tools, thanks to:
clearly identified sections;
a language that is also clearly identified: if there are words in the text that are in a different language, they must be identified as such to allow text-to-speech tools to adapt the accent.
But accessibility is not limited only to the production of the file. It reaches the entire book ecosystem, from the publisher to the reader, through the distributor, the bookseller, the librarian, and the reading system itself.
Accessibility from one end of the book chain to the other
So that there are no obstacles on the way from the accessible digital book to its reader, accessibility is everyone's business in the book chain.
The editor must document the accessibility metadata of the accessible ebook that he produced;
The distributor must then communicate this accessibility metadata to sales networks;
The bookseller must allow the reader to easily find books that are identified as accessible, but also adapt its interface to facilitate navigation, and make its online sales website itself accessible.
The librarian must do the same, by managing metadata to inform users of the accessibility features included in each book;
Reading tools finally must be in a position to offer the functionalities that will make it possible to take advantage of the level of accessibility of the file produced, such as text-to-speech, the enlargement of characters and spacings, the change of font, etc.
Broadly speaking, this is what the journey of an accessible digital book looks like:
Accessibility of ebook - Text version
Publisher: determine the exepected level of accessibility and draft the resulting specifications.
Publisher: for each book, write alternative descriptions for the images.
Publisher: create or commission the production of an accessible ebook.
Publisher: create the publication on the distributor's servers.
Distributor: offer publishers the option of recording accessibility metadata.
Publisher: record accessibility metadata.
Distributor: Transfer accessibility metadata to booksellers.
Bookseller: display accessibility features in the interface for the general public and for the institutionals.
E-lending solution: display accessibility features in the interface for the general public.
Reading app: support accessibility features.
Reader: read the book.
